A B Split Testing For AdWords

Home > Resources > Other Resources > Conversion Tracking

Search Engine optimisation

Google AdWords experts advise advertisers to include several ad variations on their campaign. This is to give them options later. Through testing and evaluation, advertisers will be able to determine which ads are converting and performing well. This gives them idea as to which ads need to be improved and which ads need to be dropped.

Google AdWords offer an A/B split testing feature that allows advertisers to evaluate ad variation for a particular search term. This feature is absolutely offered by AdWords at no additional cost.

The A/B Split Testing

The Google AdWords A/B split testing literally splits your ads for testing. It measures the impressions, click throughs, click through rate or CTR, conversions and conversion rate of your ads. After the testing procedure, Google AdWords will provide advertisers with Ad Text Report. The report displays the following information:

Ad Variations Impressions Click Through Click Through Rate Conversions Conversion Rate
Web Marketing Services 4521 155 3.43% 20 12.9%
Need Web Marketing? 4312 69 1.60% 31 44.9%
Web Marketing Experts 4000 242 6.05% 10 4.1%

Given this information, which among the ads is the best ad to maintain in your campaign? In terms of click through rate, the ad "Web Marketing Experts" gained 6.05% which is the highest among the three ads. However, there is not enough conversion rate on that ad. With this ad, you will be paying lots of money without generating sales. What does this imply? Drop that ad!

Remember that pay per click advertising should give you sales not just mere clicks. It’s the conversion rate that matters in terms of identifying which ads are performing well. In this case, the ad that has the highest conversion rate is “Need Web Marketing?”.

It is a better ad compared to the other two ads. However, it is not yet the best. Think about it. The result is generated from a single testing alone. Given a different set of ads, would the result be the same? The secret to get the best ad for your campaign is to test, test, and … you guessed it right – test!

Once you have the better title on your first test, experiment on the other ads. Create more ads so you will have a variety of ads to test. A series of testing will leave you with the best ad. Constant testing will help you get maximum efficiency for your ads. At least, you are sure you will not be paying for ads that are not helping your campaign at all.

Ad Testing is crucial to ensure you get the best ad for your AdWords campaign. Need effective ads for your campaign? Please see our AdWords Setup Service or apply for a Free PPC Analysis. For more information, please contact our PPC Experts.
