What is CSS? CSS refers to cascading style sheets. This is an extension of HMTL that allows web developers to create style to their web pages. CSS allows web designers and web developers to create a custom style. It allows the style to be separated from the content of an HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) document. Web developers can just tag the html to apply style they have created.

CSS or the Cascading Style Sheets allow website developers and designers to gain control as to how they want the web pages to be displayed. CSS can be applied to any web page. Aside from the few benefits already mentioned, CSS or Cascading Style Sheets have the following advantages:

  • CSS makes it easy for web designers and web developers to change the style of a document.

  • The HTML page size becomes smaller since the style and layout were already separated.

  • CSS reduces the bandwidth requirements of your server.

  • CSS is beneficial in terms of the speed of download.

  • CSS helps get your website spidered properly as CSS allows the navigation to be moved to the bottom of the source code and the content at the start.

How To Create An External Style Sheet

So how do you create an external style sheet? First requirement will be a simple text document. To convert that simple text document to CSS file, change the file extension from .txt to .css. So for instance,

nPresence.txt - nPresence.CSS

Suppose the file name is nPresence.

By changing the file type to .css, web developers and web designers will be able to handle the file as a CSS file. Furthermore, the .css extension of your file tells your computer as to what kind of file it is and therefore, determines how users will handle that file.

Once the file is created, remember to insert CSS or Cascading Style Sheets code directly into the page itself. Use the < style type=”text or css” > < /style >. However, if you intend to put your CSS codes on a different document, there is no need to use the “< style type=”text or css” > < /style > ” tags, just write out your CSS code.

Pointer on CSS

Cascading Style Sheets or CSS does not work the same in all kinds of browsers. So there are chances when your CSS styled web pages will look different when viewed on different browsers. Two of the current browsers that conform to the CSS standards are Netscape and FireFox. Although the early versions of Netscape doesn’t support CSS as well. For browsers that are incompatible with CSS, users will only see plain HTML content and no layout.
