It is easy to get your site listed on search engines. However, it is not as easy to get to the top of the search results of these search engines. The biggest concern here is how to start facing the challenge of being on the top rank. Here are some helpful tips to get you started:

  • Site optimization must be based on your target audience.

  • A site, in order to gain more traffic through search engines, must have optimized pages that are based on what the target audience needs. It is essential that webmasters know who the site’s target audience are; otherwise, they won’t be able to optimize the pages to meet their potential visitor’s needs. Knowledge of the target audience will help webmasters in terms of the website’s design, content and keywords.

  • Site must be navigable.

  • A particular site must be crawler-friendly to get good rank results. Remember that search engines will not be able to read pages with JavaScript links and menus or Flash and graphics. To make your site more navigable for crawlers, you should always have some form of html links in every page. They should link to the other pages of your site.

  • Use existing domain.

  • If possible do away with the idea of purchasing new domain or website. It is more advisable to use existing domains. Why? It takes a long time (9-12 months) before your site can actually appear on search engine results for a particular keyword.

  • Find the most relevant keyword/keyword phrases.

  • Keywords are vital in your site’s success on the search engines. To find the most relevant keywords/keyword phrases, you can use research tools that are available online. Remember to use specific keyword phrases rather than the general ones. Your keywords must tell exactly what your site is about.

  • Create a site that will attract more links.

  • A site must have relevant content and appealing design to be able to attract more links. Links (inbound links) are integral part of your site’s promotional campaign. The more links directed to your site, the more will search engines look at your site as valuable and important. However, if your site is not link-worthy, this won’t work for you.

  • Write copy for the pages of the site.

  • It is important that you place keyword rich copy on your pages for the search engines to see and classify. The copy should be on a page that is navigable and should be written based on the most pertinent keywords/keyword phrases. However, the keyword phrases must be used accordingly; not just for the search engines to see – remember that real users will be reading the pages as well.

These are tips to begin getting to the top of search engines. After you have started facing the challenge, things will be a whole lot easier. Just keep these tips handy, they do work!
