Improving Website's Navigability and LegibilityHome > Resources > Other Resources > Web DesignNavigability and legibility of a certain website helps customers and visitors in their needs. Getting on the shoes of your visitors, sure you would not like a website that will give you a hard time finding what you are looking for. Websites need not make browsing a hard task for its visitors. Websites that do this to their visitors are definitely not on the path to a better internet business. How many times have you browsed on other websites containing texts that are hard to decipher? The font may not be readable (or you may need a lens to go over it) or at times the text colors are hard to see against the color of the background (green over green?!). These are some of the common problems that drive away visitors from your site. These are minor problems that can always be corrected. Here are some easy ways to improve your website’s navigability and legibility:
Make your website’s font size readable for your target visitors. Don’t give your visitors the burden of having to pop their eyeballs out just to read what you have in your site. Instead, give them good reasons to browse comfortably over your site, products and services. Remember that not all potential visitors will stick to a site with font size that can’t be read properly. E.g. Website is better than Website. Have you tried browsing over a site with blue text over a blue background (text may either be lighter or darker)? This must be avoided. Instead, use contrasting colors for your text and your background. Yellow over black, black over white, white over black are better than light green over green or pink over red. Without contrast, your texts will merely disappear on the background. CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. Whenever possible, use CSS in formatting your texts. Use one style sheet and plan on how you want texts to appear on the website. CSS makes it easy for you to change or modify the whole site. Remember that not all visitors will go over your writing patiently (especially if it seems endless). What you need to do is break up the entire writing and use headlines for each topic. This way, readers and visitors will easily identify the part they want to read. These are simple steps or rules of the thumb in ensuring your website’s legibility and navigability. Some are mere products of common sense, but it is still good to be reminded of these little details that we may have disregarded.
