NOYDIR Meta Tag

NOYDIR is a Meta tag that complements the NOODP Meta tag. The search engines like Yahoo have supported the NOODP tag, but will they support the NOYDIR tag? Yahoo has recently announced that it will still support the NOYDIR tag.

The NOYDIR TAG

The major search engines like Yahoo use the information including title and abstracts provided by Open Directory Projects and in other directories like the Yahoo Directory Listing in coming up with their search results. They take the title and the descriptions found on the directories and present it on their search results.

However, not all webmaster would prefer to use the same titles and descriptions on their search engine listing. This is due to the fact that some directories create the title and description for websites listed on them. Their descriptions and titles may not be exactly what the webmasters want.

Because the webmasters don’t want to appear on the search results using the titles and descriptions provided by the directories, they began using the NOODP tag. The same thing is true to the NOYDIR tag. Yahoo won’t use its description for your website if you use the NOYDIR tag.

Adding The NOYDIR Tag

Through the use of the NOYDIR tag, Yahoo will not use its directory description for your website when it appears on the search results. So how do you use the NOYDIR tag on your web pages? Simply add the code < META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOYDIR" > on the HEAD section of your web pages.

When you insert this code on the website’s pages, your title and description will be based on the content of your web pages rather than the Yahoo Directory listing. If you want to add the NOODP tag along with the NOYDIR Tag, you should use this code: < META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOODP, NOYDIR" >.
