Search Engine optimisation

Giving your site the optimum ranking on internet’s major search engines is not as easy as it may sound. SEO or Search Engine Optimization is a skill to be mastered if you intend to make an edge on your website. There are certain basic factors to consider in SEO. This article attempts to label the SEO Do’s and Don’ts that aspiring webmasters and web developers must take into consideration.

Do'sDon'ts
Browse your website and look for a web page that is navigable and readable. This is a good starting step in optimizing your site for search engines. You can rightly pour on your optimizing skills in this page as acceptable results are likely to follow. Avoid using graphics, flash and large images in your SEO pages. These may take time in downloading. Aside from this, search engine spiders wont be able to index and read pages or texts included in an image or part of a flash animation.
Nothing beats the original content of your website. As much as possible, incorporate relevant and useful information and data into your website. Never try spamming if you wish to optimize your page and your website. Don’t even think of including hidden texts, cloaking or link farms in your website. This will affect your site’s ranking and worst, your site may be penalized by search engines.
Keywords are vital factors in your website’s visibility and popularity. Think of relevant keywords that internet browsers may key in on search engines. These keywords must be placed as close as possible on the top part of your web page. This is to ensure better keyword prominence. In using keywords, do away with irrelevant keywords. There are online tools available for keyword researches. And you can also check your keywords density and prominence through some SEO programs.
Remember that a site map will make it easier for the search engine’s spider to index all the pages included in the website. Since this is a basic fact, don’t forget to include a site map on your navigable page, if possible on the homepage. Avoid excessive link pages. Having too many links on a particular page is not recommended. It may cause problems in your SE ranking since they clutter on your website.
Your SEO page should use HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). Forget about your .asp and java scripts first since search engine’s spiders may not be able to index those pages properly. Avoid engaging in link farms. Link Farms are a group of webmasters that setup a large number of websites with links pointing to one another. Link farms may give your website a short term success but also a short term gain.

Now, that you know what to do and what not to do in terms of search engine optimization, you can start building a more relevant, visible and popular website.
