Hilltop Algorithm or what is currently known as the Austin Update is an algorithm that is provided for Google’s use. It is a new way of computing a website’s rank and position on the Google search results. The formula incorporates a so called “expert document” for specific topics and keywords. It emphasizes the use of “authority sites” to gauge the importance or relevance of other websites for a particular topic.

With the new Google algorithm, new websites will have a hard time ranking well on the search results until such time they get a link or an approval from the “expert documents” or “authority sites”. Some search engine specialists speculates that the Hilltop algorithm will turn Google’s index from democracy to autocracy.

Is the Hilltop Algorithm the new Google algorithm? Google has always been secretive when it comes to its algorithm. It has never revealed what goes into its calculation of websites’ importance, ranking and search engine positions.

Some search engine experts conclude that if ever Google uses this new algorithm, problems like over website optimisation and sinister type alliance among big corporations may arise. Most lower ranking websites will be affected in some ways, as well.

Google may change its algorithm as often as they want. As long as your website stays up to date, relevant and informative, there is nothing to worry about. Google changes its algorithm to meet its business mission. Website owners and web marketers have nothing much to worry about as long as they focus their website on its target market rather than on Google.

The hilltop algorithm may affect the ranking of many websites, especially those with lower rankings. But there is no definite effect yet. It may be a positive effect or a negative one. After all, Google never really reveals its algorithm so it is a challenge to many internet marketing specialists to make a website rank high on Google search results.

See the formula which many web marketing experts assume to be the Google’s ranking formula here, Google PageRank Algorithm. The formula puts higher weight on the quantity and quality of links pointing to the website. There might be changes on the algorithm already but that will remain a secret never to be revealed.

Websites must be focused on target market rather than on the search engines. Need more search engine updates? Please see our Search Engine Resources or contact our Search Engine Marketing Experts.
