Why You Shouldn't Over Optimise A Website

Search engine optimisation is almost a necessity for websites. Gone are the days when anyone can just build a website, leave it as it is and still get sales. With millions of websites competing for the same market, the competition online becomes tough. Websites are competing head to head with other websites for traffic and sales.

The primary sources of traffic are the search engines. A website that ranks high on the search engines gets a larger percentage of the search engine’s traffic. This is the reason why search engine optimisation is a must. To rank high on the search engines, a website must be highly optimised.

Optimising A Website The Right Way

Search engine optimisation must not only be directed to the search engines but also to the online users. Some web marketers are too eager to impress the search engines that oftentimes, their efforts lead to over-optimisation. They are too focused with what the search engines want that they fail to realize that they are already compromising the needs of the online users and the target market.

Over-optimisation is a common problem among web marketers and search engine optimisers. Over-optimising a website results to a website made for the search engines and not for the online users. Over optimisation actually results to poor ranking rather than a good one.

Disadvantages Of Over-Optimisation

Search engine optimisation aims to help websites get higher ranking on the search engines. But when over done, it has negative effects on the website. Over-optimisation is a result of over manipulation of ranking.

Because web marketers and search engine optimisers are obsessed with higher search engine ranking, they will do almost anything to push their website to the top. Usually, this entails using SEO techniques that are not exactly search engine friendly. For instance, getting just any incoming links to suffice the “link” requirement of the search engines or stuffing the web pages with keywords just because the search engines look for keywords. Using SEO techniques like this actually diminishes the quality of the website. And we all know how Google and the other search engines treat websites that are low quality.

Getting to the top of the search engines is something achievable. But you can’t get there by over optimising your website. Let the ranking go naturally. Build your website’s credibility, content, links, and keywords the natural way. This will result to a long term search engine ranking.

Don’t over-optimise a website to avoid penalties. Need to effectively optimise your website? Please see our Website Optimisation Services or you can apply for our Free SEO Analysis to know what your website needs. For more information, please contact our SEO Experts.
